Blog #5 - why are you doing this?

It is extremely hard to answer this question because of the fact that it is very vague and could refer to multiple things.

The first thing that it could refer to would be why are you taking the class. I would have to admit that this class would be one of the last ones I would have chosen myself to take. But because I have to have three upper level classes and did not have many options of what I could take I ended up in here. I feel as though amlot of the time I am frusterated because the classes in media arts I have ended up taking have not been ones that pertain to what I want to do at all. So the summary of this is that the reason I am taking the class is because I really had no other option.

The second thing that it could refer to would be why are you doing these projects. I think that the assignments help to learn the basics of what animation deals with. It is hard though because the assignments do not really tell you what you have to do. An example would be the last assignment, number four, in which we were told to create a 3d ball. It never said that the ball could not look 3d and bounce but it seems as though thats what was assumed of us to do. I wish that their was more instruction in the assinments because it is really frustrating to have to spend a lot of time on an assignment and turn it in and then be told that everything is wrong.

So because this question was not detailed enough I really do not understand what you wanted us to answer about. So i answered all I could think of. I do not know if you meant it to be the way it was presented or not but it is alot like the assignment questions. And need to be a little more detailed in order to answer or do an assignment.

Story Board

Basically it is...
Person walking down street - see's dog in the distance - dog see's person and starts to run to them - person gets scared and starts to walk away fast - dog catches up - knocks person over - licks them in the face - person realizes large dogs are not as scary as was thought

Blog #4 - Pitch

When it comes to being told what to do with animation and having the freedom to use your own ideas, I think that I like the second better. You are so restrained as a person when you are told what to do and everyonehas somewhat similar ideas with regards to the assignments so far. Now though that everyonehas the freedom to choose their own idea for a film it brings in a whole array of new things that wouldn't be so common. When listening to everyones pitch in class it became a whole lot more interesting because everyone had different ideas and stories to tell about a "scar" they had recieved.

Since we have the freedom of picking which scar we would like to do, it makes it a lot more interesting than if we were just told what to do because their couldbe a lot more background to it. I specifically chose the scar on my cheek from when I was younger and got bit my a dog to do because it is something that will allow me to think outaide the box on how I want to portray it to the audience. Having a very open ended topic to choose from is a whole lot easier than one that would be closed.

While thinking about how I am going to show this scar in animation form I am really leaning towards doing stop motion through pictures because it would be able to add more drama to the event and would be a better way to create it than some of the other types of crewating animation. I keep thinking about e different ways I could go about adding the photos together to show the event and what all to do to get my scar accross to people without having to actually use words or music to aid and provide the viewers with a solid picture... Going to keep thinking about the different ways that I could create the scene.

Blog #3 - Cartoons

Growing up as a kid, my parents always stressed getting out and playing. So a lot of time younger was spent playing outside, playing sports, creating forts in the woods, and so on. We also spent a lot of time on vacations such as going to Yellowstone, the Grand Canyon, and out west on family vacations almost every year. Because of this and also the fact that my parents did not get cable television until I was in middle school, I did not spend a lot of time watching cartoons on television or reading cartoons in the newspaper and so on.
The one distinct thing I can remember about when I was younger that has to do with cartoons is my mom would always pack our backpacks to take on the plane and would put fun stuff to keep us occupied inside. A lot of times it was twizzlers, cards, drawing pads and pencils, books, and Archie comic books. I loved reading them on the plane. But other than that I really did not have a lot of a connection to cartoons as a kid.

Being older now I still feel as though I do not really have a huge connection to cartoons because I just do not really read them. I spend a lot of time with my puppy playing and focus on school so I guess cartoons just are not a main focus. Even when watching television I watch a lot more reality television and stuff on the discovery and history channels as well as I like to watch crime shows such as CSI, Law & Order, NCIS, and so on. So even when it comes to television cartoons are not a focus either. I have never really thought about the fact that I do not really pay attention to this until now so it is definitely something now in my mind but I don't know whether it is really a bad thing that I don't or not? Humm...

Blog #2- Flip book

First off I have to start by saying that I completely forgot about this because I am so used to not having anything due on the weekends.
Secondly, I have to say that taking the index cards that I had drawn and scanning them on to the computer by itself was a daunting task. I think it ended up taking me somewhere around four hours to do so. But maybe that's just because I am a perfectionist and had to have them all lined up and only allowed myself to scan three at a time. Additionally to that I had a lot of struggles with putting the cards that I had scanned onto the computer into after effects/premiere. I kept switching between the two and trying each one to see which one I could create it in better and easier. I felt like actually making each of the cards I had scanned a certain length so that they flowed and did not overlap was over all the easiest of all the different tasks that this project required. Another thing that I had a lot of trouble with in the programs was getting the dang pictures to show up in the preview box so that I could make sure they were showing up correctly and timed right.

The very last thing that was such a pain in the butt was realizing that all the work I had done and all the time I had spent waiting for vimeo to upload my animation, was a waste. The video when I first viewed it was way different timing wise than the video I had created in after effects. What can ya do though? I have no clue why it was sped up in vimeo when it wasn't like that at all before. If you have any clue or could help me in the future with these things please lemme know.

Loved my flip book but animation is another story because of how frustrating it was to do and how it ended up messed up online.

Blog #1 - Talking to future me

16 credit hours and a semester full of 2 art classes, environmental science and a lab, accelerated history ending at the end of February, and this class I am somewhat stressed to think about all that this semester entails. Well at least for the first half of the semester. So if I was to go into the future and have to remind myself of how I am feeling right now I would tell myself to think about how much I am going through right now and that it is no where near as stressful in April as it is right now in January. Especially with trying to get back into the groove of school mode and organizing everything that I have to do. I would tell myself to breathe, relax, and take time to have fun with breaks and such in order to make it a less stressful environment. This would all allow for it to be easier to work on getting all the school work done at the end of the semester and also make it so I do not go crazy thinking about the stressfulness of exams and final projects.

I plan on this semester organizing myself a little bit better and trying not to be the procrastinator that I usually am... but as you see this is already an issue because I am writing this last minute. I have struggled trying to figure out what an RSS feed is and how to do it and everything so this is why. But I will set goals for myself and in April look back on whether I accomplished what I had planned to do or not. Looking back at this would also be good advice because it might show myself that I have tried very hard and what I end up with in the end will be my best and not to worry about what my grades end up as, as long as I try hard and do my best.

I hope that I have figured this out right and answered the question in the manner you expected because I have read the question over and over and for some reason keep trying to come up with an answer, this will have to suffice because I have re-written this like ten times and am making myself crazy over a blog entry.

Ps. This is what I had to show Kristen yesterday because he is just too cute. His name is Bentley! Sorry for causing a distraction during class.
